Course structure

We will have a mixture of presentations to introduce you to the topics of the module followed by hands on sessions, getting you coding straight away. We will have break out rooms for the hands on coding sessions, with around 4 students per tutor.

Topics Covered

The below topics may sound extensive and “out worldly” to the novice, but do not worry. We will show you exactly what each concept entails and gently take you through worked examples to better understand and utilize each one.

• The terminal - the black window where you type in commands
• Syntax - the coding grammar
• Variables - where you store things
• Comments - stuff to read later when you have no idea what the code is supposed to do
• Control flow - if this then that
• Expressions and operators - e.g., add these two things, make x equal to 3
• Functions - hey function, calculate the square root of 9
• Error handling - you were trying to do what!
